Along with the key blade which is cut to match your locks, a transponder key also contains a small microchip or transponder within the plastic casing. This transponder is coded to a specific receiver or ECU (electronic control unit) in your vehicle. Using radio frequency identification (RFID), the transponder sends its serial number to the receiver. If the number is confirmed then the ignition can be started.
The RFID is very low powered, so the key must close to the receiver to work.
Transponder keys prevent your vehicle from being hotwired as the engine will not start without the correct authorization. Transponder keys can also carry remotes to enable remote locking and in some modern vehicles are used for keyless entry and push button start systems. In some transponder keys the blade part is hidden within the casing because it is only needed in emergencies.
